2024-06-10 Jumping Into a New Adventure…

New Adventure = Noom Adventure 😂

I’ve known about Noom for several years and have an acquaintance who found great success with using the program so I know it can work. In case you haven’t heard of it, it’s an app/program designed to help people develop better eating behaviors and lose weight. It promises to be way more than a calorie tracker or coaching app. It’s supposed to be a complete package that can educate and transform a persons thinking and relationship with food.

I’m so leery of apps and fads, though, and typically try to ignore them. I also have a complicated history with food and dieting and though it’s “undiagnosed,” I know myself and how dieting behavior can lead to unhealthy eating.

In short, I will take the dieting to an extreme to achieve a result. As an example, when it comes to calorie tracking, I might set a reasonable goal of 1,500 calories a day, but once I see the number on the scale go down, my brain kicks into overdrive. If I can lose a pound every couple weeks on 1,500. What can I do with 1,400, 1,300 and before you know it, I’m pushing it to 1000 calories. Then 800. Then 500.

Of course this makes me feel like trash even though I’m finally satisfied with the number on the scale. I weigh first thing in the morning and beam with joy, then go about being a zombie for the rest of the day. See… unhealthy.

On the flip side, my recent weight gain has got me pretty down. Nobody else can see this or know that I’m frustrated my clothes don’t fit. It’s been going up about a pound a week the last five weeks. Ugh!! (No, pretty sure I’m not preggo.)

So even though I’m eating more what I want and feel better throughout the day, physically, I’m super grumpy. What I need is balance. I know this. It’s not rocket science. But I think a proven method will help me figure out what that is.

Enter stage left: Noom

I bit the bullet yesterday and “purchased” a seven day free trial with a commitment for two months if I don’t cancel in those seven days.

My goal this week is to spend as much time with it as I can, reasonably, to see how it could help me. I’m about 24 hours in now and so far so good.

I’ve listened to some beginner lessons, unlocked a few features, connected the app to my Fitbit, and I’m on the precipice of logging food for the first time. This is where some apps fail.

I did a trial and review of 3 or 4 apps like 8 years ago and My Fitness Pal was the winner because it was easy to use and log food and add custom foods. I’m looking forward to seeing how Noom compares. Since that was 8 years ago, I’m sure tech has gotten much slicker naturally so I have high expectations.

I suppose revealing this newest little experiment means I’ll probably be posting more in the coming weeks about my “analysis” of the software, app, and support as well as my personal progress. I’m not making any promises though. If you’re a regular visitor (THANK YOU!), you know how it can go.

Anyway, that’s the update today. I’ve gotta go listen to today’s Noom lesson. Not as exciting as Bachelor in Paradise, but at least I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished something.

Thanks for reading.

Peace,
